Default xorg.conf from nvidia-settings saved but not read at startx

Whenever xorg.conf got written to by nvidia-settings, the settings are not read when restarting X. I try to get three monitors running on a GT 640.

I tried
  • sudo nvidia-settings and save to xorg.conf
  • save preview from settings to a random file to replace xorg.conf later
  • nvidia-xconfig --base-mosaic --metamodes "settings"

It doesnt help. Any ideas?
