Because the TDP of a console GPU has to be, at most, ~125W. About half the TDP of a 7970.

I can't see them not using GCN architecture in the Xbox 720 given the last two consoles from MS used the most advanced GPU architecture available at the time from either vendor.

I think something like a 7850. If we're lucky possibly with a 192-bit bus and 3GB VRAM. That's about the best possible case IMO.

BF3's a demanding beast, isn't it? Even brings the 7970 to a min of 29fps in certain places, hmm.

7970's a good card. I'll be picking one up soon to go in the new box I'm building. I think it has a lot of unlocked potential. The specs on it are crazy.

If your going to use 4XMSAA then you should disable Post AA. All Post AA does is produce a blur effect to help hide jaggies and its a feature intended for folks who do not have rigs which can handle MSAA but enabeling the two together will cause an unecessary hit in the frame rate department.

I know with my overclocked GTX 580 I get better minimums and averages in that same map using all of the same settings with the exception of Post AA being disabled.

havent seen any recent reviews on skyrim since the new patch does make a significant improvement to the game engine.

check out the fps...the min is still the identical across, which suggests that there is a lot more than can be done on this game, but check out the average...

The 7970 is also using AD MXAA as well.

Whats the 580 overclocked too?

Edit-Nm, I see they were kind enough to leave the GTX 580 at its stock clocks and then compare it to an overclocked HD 7970, lol. This is hardocp we are talking about though so I shouldnt be to surprised I guess. Anyway nice results for the HD 7970 but wish they had at least given the GTX 580 a decent overclock, it wouldnt beat the HD 7970 but it certainly would have been a lot closer.

They compare stock to stock, then o/c the 7970 to show how much improvement can be made on a o/c.

1300 on the gpu....on air...and still maintain a very good temp...

Really? lowest clocked HD 7970 I saw in that review was at 1000mhz which isnt stock. Will go back and check.

Okay went back and found it, they stuck it in at the last part of the review and then managed to leave the GTX 580 out.

Oh well it doesnt matter, the HD 7970 is a great card and if nvidia doesnt do something in a few more months then I will be back with ATI for at least a while.
