@nvidia: this is the reply from Gnome developers:

Please report this to NVidia. That's most probably their fault, since it
doesn't happen with Nouveau. GNOME developers cannot fix their driver,
though they can help NVidia guys if they ask it.

I tried to reproduce this a couple of times now, but without any success. Can you clarify whether you're only seeing problems while scrolling, or if it sometimes persist after rendering has settled? If that happens, does triggering a re-render fix it? (eg. enabling an expose effect or something like that)

Firstly, Sorry for replying late, as nvnews forum usercp never showed "new posts" in this thread.

It persists if I stop scrolling. when I do any other actvitiy on Desktop like launching a random gnome apps like calculator or nautilus file manager, the image renders correctly. Yes!Yes! If I try expose, it is fixed. I usually does that.

Also, I think the issue is faced more by Geforce 7300,7600 series GPUs?

Please Let Me know, How can I produce more debugging informations about this bug? I am ready to give any details needed.

Thank You for the reply.

Hello,

Having similar issues in Iceweasel and Debian 64 bits (wheezy) after upgrading.

The issue can be reproduced easily (moving fastly the arrow, scrolling, etc.
I guess it is a fonts issue and nvidia driver. (?)

I've seen that the driver user in X is the "noveau", as these files are open by xorg:
/usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/dri/nouveau_dri.so
/usr/lib/xorg/modules/drivers/nouveau_drv.so

Hardware: VGA compatible controller: NVIDIA Corporation G86 [GeForce 8400 GS] (rev a1)

Driver: dpkg -s xserver-xorg-video-nouveau
Package: xserver-xorg-video-nouveau
Status: install ok installed
Priority: optional
Section: x11
Installed-Size: 517
Maintainer: Debian X Strike Force <debian-x@lists.debian.org>
Architecture: amd64
Version: 1:0.0.16+git20111201+b5534a1-1
Provides: xorg-driver-video
Depends: libc6 (>= 2.4), libdrm-nouveau1a (>= 2.4.23), libudev0 (>= 146), xorg-video-abi-11, xserver-xorg-core (>= 2:1.10.99.901)
Recommends: libgl1-mesa-dri (>= 7.11.1)
Description: X.Org X server -- Nouveau display driver
This driver for the X.Org X server (see xserver-xorg for a further description)
provides support for NVIDIA Riva, TNT, GeForce, and Quadro cards.

Please install the NVIDIA driver rather than nouveau; this forum isn't for nouveau support:

Does your version of gnome-shell include the patch attach to this bug?

https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=657071

Can you try the workaround described in this bug, also?

Thanks!

Hi, I had a hard drive failure and am using Fedora 17 64-bit the same Nvidia hardware. the Garbling is slightly lesser although the problem exists. I think, after an hour of use or so, this issue increases?

I tried:
Code:
CLUTTER_PAINT=disable-clipped-redraws:disable-culling gnome-shell --replace
Code:
[adminguy@localhost ~]$ CLUTTER_PAINT=disable-clipped-redraws:disable-culling /bin/gnome-shell --replace
      JS LOG: GNOME Shell started at Fri Jun 01 2012 18:55:55 GMT+0530 (IST)
Window manager warning: Log level 16: STACK_OP_REMOVE: window 0x1ab not in stack

Window manager warning: Got a request to focus 0x200008c (Bug 720605) with a timestamp of 0. This shouldn't happen!
and I tried scrolling through web pages which are images heavy. the problem is not showing up after running above command. I will update if the problem reappears.

Interestingly, I never faced the issue with Terminal(gnome-terminal) as many reports. For Me, Firefox,Image viewers like shotwell,eog shows image garbled or "stuck at middle" while scrolling. it is a lot lesser in Fedora than Debian possibly because it is using Gnome-Shell-3.4.

package versions:
gnome-shell-3.4.1-5.fc17.x86_64
mutter-3.4.1-3.fc17.x86_64
clutter-1.10.6-1.fc17.x86_64
kernel-3.3.7-1.fc17.x86_64

Thank You

However, I face one more issue: When Scroll through pages, the font artefact/texture changes and looks kind of bold and not anti-aliased. it is corrected once I press ALT+F1 or do other activity like scroll or move to other tab. this issue existed along with the original problem discussed.
will try to take screenshot.

Thank You for the Support.

Here is the screenshot when this occurs. When I scroll, one line gets dark font. check the similar quotes rendered differently. the 2nd quote looks like boldened and no anti aliasing IIUC :

it should be rendered like this:

TIA

It really seems to be a problem with the driver. I tested a Geforce 6600 GT (128 MB) with 173.14.35 and with 302.17 (Opensuse 11.4). There is a big difference in speed. Firefox is very slow and jerky with the old driver. With a Geforce 6600 it doesn't matter, as you can use a newer driver, but with older graphic cards in laptops (some Dell M60, Quadro FX Go 700) it's a problem. Those Dell M60 are nearly not useable (I tested a lot with different agp speeds, GlyphCache, InitialPixmapPlacement and so on), an old Dell X300 with Intel graphics works fine. So I think, the nvidia developers should try to fix the bug. Thank you.
