Thats right, the Unreal Devlopment Kit has just been released to the game making community for free. Virtually all the tools that unreal engine 3 game studios use are included in this package for indie developers to use to make indipendent games and distribute for free.
http://www.moddb.com/engines/unreal-...free-to-indies Surely Crytek are going to have to follow suit if they are serious about competing with the UDK. |

Hmm, interesting move.
After reading the article, it says the engine is free for independent development, but once the game goes commercial, Epic gets 25% of profits after the game makes $5000. It's a good idea imo and probably how game engines should be offered. This way it increases usage and more people can learn the engine and become proficient at using it. Great release |

I think by doing this their goal is to get casual/hobby developers into the game engine, and if they ever pull a "world of goo" and go commercial, Epic can make a decent amount of coin without having to do anything extra.
That, and it is far more likely that game startups will pick their engine over their competitors', namely because it is much lower risk in investment. |

Well this is very interesting.
It'd be pretty awesome if Source, idTech5 and Cryengine 3 went this way.

If an indie house uses this to make a game that really takes off Epic will make some serious money from it. At the same time, no upfront engine costs means it will be easier for an indie house to make said game.
Win-win as I see it. Good show.
