Steam updates wiping out game achievements

Early yesterday morning when I got done gaming, I saw that Steam had to update again...it had already updated once THAT NIGHT. So two updates, hours apart, later, I played again last night, and got an achievement I knew I already had. Someone told me that Steam had reset a bunch of achievements because of an update glitch. Sure enough, most of my L4D2 achievements were reset.

How often does this happen? I had most of the achievements, including some that are pretty hard to get, like The Real Deal (finish campaign on Expert/Realism), and had finished all but one campaign on Expert. Why even bother having the achievements if they are just going to wipe them over and over again? I've heard of it happening many times so far, and it finally happened to me. If Steam doesn't fix that, I'm not going to appreciate it one damn bit. I'll still play, but I won't even bother trying to get the achievements anymore.

Do they ever set them back to what they were, or am I out of luck?

Ok, I think I know where they went wrong...they tried to make stats and achievement system work better on our systems, and in the process, they screwed up. Looks like it's going to be permanent, because the update affects how things are stored on our HDDs.

Sounds like just another way to make some people keep playing more by wiping their stuff out.

A Steam client update is now available. To apply the update, click the File menu inside of Steam and then select "Check for Steam Client Updates...". The specific changes include:

Steam Client


Improved caching of images/icons fetched over HTTP and used inside client UI (avatars, achievement images, etc)

Windows 7 jump list improvements

Improved Steam Cloud transfer protocol performance/reliability when syncing large files

Consistency improvements for stats and achievements

Improved network communication work

Added password support to steam://connect command for connecting to game servers. The proper syntax is: steam://connect/[IP:Port]/[password]

Fix for the overlay sometimes not detecting input messages in games with different focus and active hwnds

Optimized the stats and achievements system's disk usage

Fixed cloud games attempting to sync when the client is in offline mode

I'm not worried about getting them anymore. It used to give me a feeling that I was playing the game to the fullest, trying to play it in every way possible, but now I realize that that is just a bunch of nonsense. I enjoy playing L4D2 because of the people I play with, not with the little differences in each of the many acheivements.

I like to 100% games I really love, but whether a social network records that or not matters none at all to me.

In mw 2 it allows you to unlock better weapons and bonuses. Really fun addition to a great mp if you ask me.
